Your Proposed 2015 Board of Directors
Appellate Practice Section 
 Hello, Members:
The Appellate Practice Section Nominating Committee has issued its report, below, proposing a slate of officers for 2015. If you want to contest the election, please get the signatures of at least 10 members of the section on the petition, email it to D.D. Wolohan by Oct. 31, and state which position you are contesting. A runoff will follow. If there is no opposition after Oct. 31, the slate is approved by acclamation and will serve in 2015.

Appellate Practice Section 2014 Nominating Committee Report
 The Appellate Practice Section Nominating Committee makes the following nominations:
 Position 1            01/01/15 - 12/31/17 term (previously held by Caren Friedman)  
Zachary A. Ives has been practicing in the areas of criminal and civil litigation and appeals for 14 years and has been listed in Best Lawyers in America for the past five years.  He has been a partner at Garcia Ives Nowara since 2012 and before that was a partner at Freedman Boyd Hollander Goldberg Ives & Duncan. Mr. Ives served as a law clerk to Chief Justice Pamela B. Minzner, and the New Mexico Supreme Court later appointed him to chair its committee for Criminal Uniform Jury Instructions. He has been involved in a number of appeals in state and federal courts, including one that the U.S. Supreme Court decided unanimously in favor of his client. Mr. Ives is a member of the Criminal Justice Act panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit and has orally argued several cases in the 10th Circuit.

Position 2            01/01/15 - 12/31/17 term (currently held by Larry Montaño)

Anastasia Stevens is a shareholder with the firm of Keleher & McLeod, P.A., in Albuquerque.  Before joining Keleher & McLeod in 1999, she served as Commission Counsel to the New Mexico Public Utility Commission, the predecessor of the Public Regulation Commission, and as staff counsel to the Public Utility Commission. She clerked with the Hon. Harry E. Stowers Jr., of the New Mexico Supreme Court from 1985-87, after receiving her J.D. from the University of Chicago. Ms. Stevens' practice includes administrative proceedings, civil litigation, and appeals from court and regulatory decisions, with an emphasis on utility issues.  She served on the Board of the Appellate Practice Section from 2007 to 2012 and was Chair in 2011.
Position 3            01/01/15 - 12/31/17 term (currently held by Lynn Mostoller)
Edward Ricco is a New Mexico Board of Legal Specialization recognized specialist in appellate practice and is head of the appellate practice group at the Rodey Law Firm. He has been active in the Appellate Practice Section for many years and has served on the Board of Directors for all but two of the past 20 years. He has twice served as Chair of the section.
Position 4            01/01/15 - 12/31/16 term (currently held by Tim Atler)
Larry J. Montaño is a partner with the law firm of Holland & Hart LLP. Mr. Montaño provides trial and appellate counsel to clients on natural resources litigation, commercial litigation, and personal injury and wrongful death cases. He represents the interests of companies and individuals in commercial disputes, personal injury/wrongful death cases, and related matters. He also has represented other companies and individuals, mostly litigating cases involving commercial, construction, and real property disputes. Prior to joining Holland & Hart LLP in its Santa Fe office, Mr. Montaño served as a law clerk to the Hon. Bruce D. Black, Federal District Court Judge for the District of New Mexico and, before that, as a law clerk to the Hon. Lynn Pickard (ret.), then Chief Judge of the New Mexico Court of Appeals.

The State Bar of New Mexico Appellate Practice Section is an organization of lawyers and judges who handle appeals or are interested in appellate law. Our purpose is to provide our members, the judiciary, the State Bar and the public with information and dialogue concerning issues affecting appellate law. We are interested in the changing nature and development of the common law, and provide practicing lawyers with an opportunity to share ideas, legal research and networking to provide the highest possible quality of legal services, assisting appellate judges in rendering the highest quality opinions.

Membership in the Appellate Practice Section is open to any lawyer licensed in New Mexico who is interested in these issues. You may join the Appellate Practice Section if you are a member in good standing of the State Bar of New Mexico.

You may enroll at any time during the year; however, your membership will expire in December of the same year.
