Children's Law Section Annual Art Contest

Introduction:

Over 200 children who are seeking to improve their lives through court-ordered programs competed in the sixth annual Children’s Law Section Art Contest. The annual event seeks to change the lives of New Mexico’s troubled youths by celebrating children’s artistic talent and promoting mentorship for positive behavior to children in the delinquency system. The contest provided a positive opportunity for the children to express their struggles, look toward the future, and celebrate artistic effort. Each year the Children’s Law Section sponsors the contest with the generous help of community donations.

Children is this year's contest will create works of art on canvas bags based on the theme "Tools for Success." A reception and display of the artwork will be held from 5 to 8 pm, Oct. 28, at Scalo Northern Italian Grill in Albuquerque.  Justice Petra Miminez Maes will be the honored guest.  

Last year’s awards were announced at an exhibition Nov. 7 at the Juvenile Justice Center in Albuquerque. Contestants were asked to create a work based on the theme, “Looking Forward, Looking Back,” using T-shirts as their medium for displaying their art. The shirt front expressed the artist’s view of his or her future, and the back, his or her past. Over the years , the contest have proven that communicating ideas and emotions through art and writing fosters thought and discussion among youth on how to change their lives for the better.
The section solicited sponsors to provide cash donations or prizes for contest winners. The tax-deductible donations enabled contest organizers to set up the exhibit and purchase shirts, art supplies, and prizes.

Honorable Mention - $10 McDonald’s Gift Card

Most Unique Use of Materials Award - $25 United Artists Theater
New Vision Award Additional - $25 Walmart Gift Card

Public Defender's Award - $50 Gift Card Coronado Mall
Soroptomist's Award - $25 Gift Card to Target

Strength and Hope Award Additional - $25 Walmart Gift Card
