Children's Law Section Annual Art Contest
The Children’s Law Section recently held their 5th Annual Art and Writing Contest. The annual event seeks to change the lives of New Mexico’s troubled youths by celebrating children’s artistic talent and promoting mentorship for positive behavior to children in the delinquency system. The contestants are children who are either detained or involved in such programs as the Youth Reporting Center, Drug Court and anti-domestic violence programs.
Contestants in Bernalillo, Sandoval, Valencia, Torrance and Santa Fe counties were asked to create a work based on the theme, “What Other People Think of Me/What I Think of Myself,” using masks as their medium for displaying their art. The first four years of the contest have proven that communicating ideas and emotions through art and writing fosters thought and discussion among youth on how to change their lives for the better.
The section solicited sponsors to provide cash donations or prizes for contest winners. These contributions were meaningful to the employees of the various juvenile justice centers, Children's Court judges and attorneys who work tirelessly with very limited resources on behalf of the children. The tax-deductible donations enabled contest organizers to purchase masks, art supplies and prizes and set up the exhibit.
