Children's Law Section Annual Art Contest
Ninth Annual Children’s Art and Writing Contest -
"The World Through My Lens"
The Annual Art and Writing Contest for youth involved in New Mexico’s juvenile justice system allows court-involved youth to communicate ideas and emotions through art and writing and encourages youth to consider and discuss ways to change their lives for the better. In 2011, youth were asked to submit digital photographs based on the theme “Through My Lens.”
A group of about 50 people gathered Oct. 19 at Scalo Northern Italian Grill to congratulate the youth who participated. The majority of those who attended were the youth themselves, members of their families, program coordinators, and members of the legal profession. Those present were enthusiastic and encouraging, cheering as Justice Petra Jimenez Maes and Judge John Romero distributed awards and listening intently as the artists’ written works were read aloud. The group was captivated when one young person spoke with great candor about her artwork, which described her life in a family suffering from generations of drug addiction and how her probation helped her choose a new path.
The art and writing contest was generously supported by members of the judiciary, the bar, and the community, whose donations helped defray the costs of the reception, as well as printing, framing, and displaying the photos.
In addition to all the donors listed here on the left who made this year's art contest possible, the section not only wants to acknowledge Scalo owner, Steve Paternoster, who once again donated the food and beverages for the awards reception, but also Justice Petra Jimenez Maes, who helped distribute the awards and congratulate the winners.
