Disaster Legal Services

FEMA Activation

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has contracted with the ABA Young Lawyers Division pursuant to which the ABA/YLD mobilizes young lawyers in a state where a disaster is declared to organize the provision of free civil legal services for disaster victims.

State Bar staff along with the assistance of the State Bar's Young Lawyers Division provide legal advice, counseling and representation to individuals affected by a disaster.  The legal assistance available includes replacing lost documents, housing, landlord-tenant disputes, consumer rights, insurance questions, and referrals to local or state agencies which may render further assistance.  A legal service hotline toll-free number is available as a means for individuals to contact for assistance with legal questions and concerns.  The disaster hotline number is 1-800-876-6657.
