Pre-Petition Credit Counseling - New bankruptcy case petitions must be accompanied by a certificate of completion of a budget and credit counseling briefing. The new law has made this requirement a provision of section 109(h) of the Bankruptcy Code, which relates to eligibility to be a debtor. The requirement is applicable to individual debtors in chapter 7 and 13 cases.

The workshop presentation is a general group discussion of current law topics. The clinic appointments are scheduled 30 minute private consultations with an attorney. Seniors wishing to consult with an attorney should contact the listed individual to schedule a clinic appointment begining approximately one month prior to the date of the presentation. Staff attorneys will conduct a financial Powers of Attorney. Following the presentation, attorneys will assist participants with the execution of Powers of Attorney documents. No appointments are being made.
All senior citizens who live in the area are encouraged to attend, regardless of whether they have previously participated in events at the senior center. This may be the only occasion the Lawyer Referral for the Elderly Program will be in the county during the next year.
Established in 1983, LREP is part of the non-profit New Mexico State Bar Foundation. LREP operates at statewide toll-free helpline, a lawyer referral service, and a local outreach program. For free helpline assistance, call LREP at (800) 876-6657.
