Consumer Debt/Bankruptcy Workshops

The State Bar of New Mexico and the Bankruptcy Law Section.  Workshops begin with a presentation by volunteer attorneys, followed by a question and answer period. After the lecture, attorneys meet with individuals for a free one-on-one consultation to discuss specific bankruptcy and consumer debt issues.

Workshops are held in Albuquerque and Las Cruces.

Pre-Petition Credit Counseling - New bankruptcy case petitions must be accompanied by a certificate of completion of a budget and credit counseling briefing. The new law has made this requirement a provision of section 109(h) of the Bankruptcy Code, which relates to eligibility to be a debtor. The requirement is applicable to individual debtors in chapter 7 and 13 cases.

Albuquerque

Albuquerque workshops are generally held the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at State Bar Center, 5121 Masthead NE, Albuquerque. Directions to the State Bar Center.

Divorce Options Workshops

This workshop includes a presentation by a volunteer attorney, materials on divorce, an open question and answer period, and up to three hours of free consultation with a volunteer attorney at a later date.

Landlord/Tenant Workshops

This free program is sponsored by Law Access New Mexico with assistance from the State Bar of New Mexico. Attorneys from Law Access New Mexico will present information on New Mexico law governing landlord/tenant relationships and will answer general questions of participants. Workshops are open to all landlords and tenants.

Lawyer Referral for the Elderly Workshops

The Lawyer Referral for the Elderly Program (LREP) offers free legal workshop(s) and clinic(s) throughout the state. 

The workshop presentation is a general group discussion of current law topics.  The clinic appointments are scheduled 30 minute private consultations with an attorney.  Seniors wishing to consult with an attorney should contact the listed individual to schedule a clinic appointment begining approximately one month prior to the date of the presentation. Workshops are held at different sites in New Mexico.

Established in 1983, LREP is part of the non-profit New Mexico State Bar Foundation. LREP operates at statewide toll-free helpline, a lawyer referral service, and a local outreach program. For free helpline assistance, call LREP at (800) 876-6657.

Staff attorneys will conduct a financial Powers of Attorney. Following the presentation, attorneys will assist participants with the execution of Powers of Attorney documents. No appointments are being made.

All senior citizens who live in the area are encouraged to attend, regardless of whether they have previously participated in events at the senior center. This may be the only occasion the Lawyer Referral for the Elderly Program will be in the county during the next year.
