Youth in Juvenile Justice System Use Art to Improve Their Lives
Albuquerque, N.M.—An awards ceremony for the 2012 Children’s Law Section Art and Writing Contest will be held from 5:30–8 p.m., Oct. 25, at Scalo Northern Italian Grill, Albuquerque. The section will recognize contest winners as well as the donors who helped pay for art supplies and prizes.
The annual contest aims to help improve the lives of New Mexico’s youth who are involved with the juvenile justice system. Youth who are currently detained or involved in such programs as the Youth Reporting Center, drug court, and anti-domestic violence programs used supplies provided by the section to create works based on the theme “My Super Self: A Portrait of Me at My Best.”
The first nine years of the contest have demonstrated that communicating ideas and emotions through art and writing fosters thought and discussion among youth on how to change their lives for the better.
