About the State Bar of New Mexico

The State Bar of New Mexico is a professional membership organization of attorneys licensed to practice law in New Mexico. The organization was established in 1886 and is currently a 501(c)(6) corporation. The mission of the State Bar is to be a united and inclusive organization serving the legal profession and the public.


The State Bar is governed by a volunteer Board of Bar Commissioners, all of whom are licensed attorneys elected by their peers from designated bar commissioner districts throughout New Mexico. Ernestina "Tina" R. Cruz is the State Bar President for 2020.

The State Bar’s Executive Team and staff help to execute member projects and goals.


Ernestina R. Cruz is a solo practitioner and the owner of Cruz Law Office in Taos. Her practice is primarily focused in the areas of civil rights, employment law, and personal injury. She is a graduate of the University of New Mexico (B.A. 1996 and J.D. 2001) and the University of Notre Dame (M.A. 1998).  In addition to her law practice, she is currently attending the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law where she is completing coursework to obtain a LL.M. in Dispute Resolution with a concentration in Mediation. She is a past chair of the State Bar Young Lawyers Division and Employment and Labor Law Section. She currently serves on the Commission on Access to Justice and represents the Fourth Bar Commissioner District.

The public service and educational arm of the State Bar is the New Mexico State Bar Foundation which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation established in 1991. Center for Legal Education

The Bar Foundation houses the State Bar’s continuing legal education course provider: the Center for Legal Education. Member dues do not subsidize CLE operations. Find a program in our one-stop shop for affordable and convenient courses including live and self-study.
