Legal Specialization in New Mexico
The Board of Bar Commissioners has voted to implement a legal specialization program in New Mexico.
As you may be aware, the New Mexico Supreme Court discontinued its legal specialization program at the end of 2017 and the specialists from its program are currently in a wind-down period. This new program is not a continuation of the Supreme Court program. The State Bar program will be modeled on very successful legal specialization programs of other State Bars. It will have requirements similar to the Supreme Court program (including minimum years in practice, percent of practice, peer review, and supplementary CLE). In addition, specialist applicants will be required to pass an exam. We hope that this new and improved program will be available to accept applications beginning in fall 2020.
